Year 5-8 House Cross Country Championships 2019/20

On the 2nd March, all boys from Year 5-8 competed in their annual House cross country competition held at Rokeby Sports Ground.

After what has been an exceptionally wet winter, the course itself had to be altered from its usual route through Kingston University Sports Ground. The course this year incorporated a lot of familiar terrain for the boys with the start and finish being at RSG, but a large section of the course involved crossing the bridge into Richard Chanellor’s fields. A big loop around the perimeter of these fields in what were very boggy conditions and a jump over a ditch to cross into the bottom section of Kingston University grounds enabled a genuine cross country feel to the run itself.

The boys adapted well to an unfamiliar run and displayed camaraderie in running their hardest and giving their houses the best chance of success. It was pleasing to see the boys getting the most out of their racing, with many enjoying the competition more than they thought they might do. 163 boys in total were racing and competing in this competition and it was great to see the perseverance and resilience in all of them.

The re-routed course was measured at 1.4 miles, (2.25km), and proved a challenging run for many of the boys. As well as some fantastic individual performances, the boys displayed an excellent work ethic in running hard and accumulating the least amount of points for their houses. Not only did the winning boy run in an incredible 8 min 27 seconds, with a new course record, but 128 boys ran the route in under 20 minutes.

The total house points scored for each year group is calculated by dividing the number of runners representing their houses in each year group by the total of the places that the competitors finished. Thus, the least amount of points is desired to be the winning house overall.

Please see the information below for the individual winners in each year group as well as the house positions for all the year groups involved. Once the Year 3 & 4’s take part in their respective house cross country, the overall winners will be determined and the shield awarded to the winning house at the Sports Prize giving assembly later this term.
