Languages at Rokeby focus on enabling boys to express themselves with confidence and competence.
Boys learn French from Year 2, and continue learning the language for the rest of the time they are at Rokeby. Equal emphasis is given to the four skills (reading, writing, oral and listening) so that oral fluency is combined with grammatical accuracy.
We take our boys to visit France in Year 6 (Provence or the Loire Valley) and in Year 7 (Normandy) so they can communicate with native French speakers, further developing their skills and confidence.
We teach Mandarin Chinese from Year 3 and by the time our boys leave we expect they will have a CE qualification in the language. We believe that Mandarin Chinese is a hugely important language to learn and will stand the boys in good stead in the future.
