Sport for all, and the lessons that last a lifetime!
Ask boys what they love about school and, for many, sport will be high on the list. At Rokeby, sport is far more than a fixture on the timetable. It is one of the most powerful ways we help boys to grow, not only as athletes but as people.
We believe in sport for all. While we are proud of our history of significant sporting achievement, our underlying philosophy is that every boy deserves to find a sporting passion of his own. From Year 3, all boys can represent the school in competitive fixtures, while others will discover a quiet love of running or tennis. Both matter equally. Our job is to offer as wide a range of sports as possible so that each boy can find his place. From our youngest boys aged 4 through to our 13-year-olds, every boy deserves to find a sporting passion of his own.
Sport for all means every boy deserves to find a passion of his own.
That range is genuinely broad. The main games follow the seasons, with football in the autumn, rugby and cross-country in the spring, and cricket and athletics in the summer. Alongside these, boys can try basketball, fencing, judo, skiing (from Year 6), table tennis, tennis and more. Physical education is woven through the week, and there is always something new to attempt.
Our facilities help to bring this to life. Rokeby Sports Ground, our ten-acre site in Worcester Park, is maintained to the highest standards and is where the boys play, train and compete. There is a pavilion with changing rooms and a kitchen, and the school regularly hosts matches and tournaments there. At the main school site, the hall, Astroturf and playground give space for PE, cricket nets, tennis, football and hockey.
The real value of sport, though, lies in what it teaches. On the pitch a boy learns to win graciously and to lose with dignity. He learns that effort and practice pay off, that his teammates depend on him and that he can do more than he thought. Resilience, teamwork, leadership and confidence are not abstract ideas in a Games lesson, they are lived and felt week after week. These are the qualities that shape character, and they travel far beyond the touchline.
Sport also looks after wellbeing. A boy needs to expand the potential of his growing body and to build the habits that will let him enjoy being active for the rest of his life. Time spent outdoors, moving and playing in a safe and supportive environment, is good for the body and good for the mind.
The results speak for themselves. In recent years our boys have gone on to win sports scholarships to senior schools including Hampton School, Epsom College, Reed’s School and Kingston Grammar School. Achievements like these are a wonderful reward for talent and dedication. Yet we are just as proud of the boy who finally masters a forward roll, scores his first goal, or finds the courage to join a team for the very first time.
Building character through activity is at the heart of a Rokeby education. If you would like to see our boys in action, we would love to welcome you to the school and to Rokeby Sports Ground.
