On Thursday 28th February three budding Year 5 public speakers – Henry B, Sam G and Ashok M – took part in the annual Epsom Speaking Challenge at Epsom College, along with ten other schools. While some schools opted for light-hearted topics such as Lego or Superstitions Around the World, Rokeby chose the hard-hitting Guns Should Be Banned in America. This was a subject close to the heart of our main speaker, Sam, whose cousin George attended a school in Connecticut, America, where tragically a mass shooting was carried out.
All three speakers displayed heartfelt passion in their speeches, which were delivered fluently and from memory. The judge praised all of the boys, describing their speeches as powerful and highly competent, and special congratulations must go to Henry, who received the award of Very Best Speaker of the Evening.
Indeed, all the boys should be congratulated on what was a fantastic performance.
