English

We focus on teaching our boys to be effective orators and confident readers with a broad-ranging literary interest. Both non-fiction and fiction texts are studied throughout the school year and set texts, studied over the course of a term, are often altered to reflect the current zeitgeist or a theme of particular interest to many boys.

‘Cosy upper school library has brightly coloured chairs, well stocked shelves and a cheery librarian…’

– The Good Schools Guide

Grammar and spelling are taught from the youngest year groups to ensure a secure understanding of the English language and the ways it can be manipulated for effect. In Year 6, in preparation for pre-tests, the foundations of grammar are cemented, alongside additions of more advanced syntax and punctuation.

Creative writing is taught through multiple stimuli: texts, photo or picture prompts and animations. We encourage pupils to practise writing for a wide range of purposes from creative writing and poetry to formal letters and speeches.

We have an excellent and well-resourced library with an engaging and highly literary librarian always on hand to help. We host some of the best children’s authors and poets to visit us and deliver workshops throughout the year, which adds to the variety and excitement of our English teaching.

Boys are encouraged to take part in a variety of Inter-House Competitions including Debating, Poetry Performance, Scrabble Tournaments and Spelling Bees.
