Pastoral
In order for boys to thrive at Rokeby, their personal welfare must come first. We aim to ensure that each boy is valued for who he is and for his place within the group. To this end we take pastoral care very seriously.
The first point of contact for pastoral care is the form tutor. In addition there are three heads of year, respectively for Years 3 and 4, 5 and 6, 7 and 8 who have overall responsibility for the pastoral care of the boys in their year groups and deal with matters referred by the form tutors.
Inevitably we have to maintain a well-structured and orderly environment and to this end we have a rewards and sanctions procedure. However, our aim is to train boys in good behaviour and consideration for each other, not merely to 'keep them in line'. Nevertheless, we do expect high standards of behaviour and we have a calm, measured but determined approach in eradicating misbehaviour. Conversely, yet part of the same approach, we believe in openly rewarding good attitudes and encouraging good work and effort by a full and motivating rewards programme.
We have a Head of Pastoral Care, who is also the Child Protection Officer, with whom the form tutors and heads of year liaise when the need arises. A bullying policy is pursued rigorously as we are determined to ensure that all boys feel safe and happy at school. We are constantly reviewing and updating our policies and look to the parents to support us in our aims, which are regularly reinforced to the boys in form periods with Personal, Social and Health Education and in assemblies. Most of all, we emphasise that all members of the school exemplify the values which we espouse, especially those of kindness, good manners, friendliness and assertiveness.
